Yes, Einstein@home is an excellent project that I've been very happy crunching for. Credit is also due to this projects' superb forum moderators as well.
I appreciate the responses I've received though sadly I probaly didn't frame my questions very clearly.
I was simply curious as to the very long delay in the launching of Planetquest@home, which is still in developement. Inquires to the lead developer, though always answered politely, are a little lacking in particulars, though requests for donations are always mentioned.
The lead developer is a very accomplished and respectible scientist who has contributed to NASAs' Kepler mission and other works. I believe he is completely sincere but I'm reluctant to donate to a project that may never be launched.
I was thinking just how much money would be needed? But as Bikeman and others have written, there are many other reasons a project could be delayed or stalled. That was something I hadn't considered.
I wasn't planning on starting my own BOINC project, that's way out of my skill set.

Ahh, well I see now the sense of your question. I'm not familiar with Planetquest at all, but I'd guess the guts of it is that those who are looking toward DC/BOINC to help their science goals are, by definition, short of funds and resources generally. If they had a budget encompassing the needed IT requirements they wouldn't be touting for help in that way, hence you'd never hear of it. Looking at it that way, they'd be probably needing help in lots of other non-IT ways too. I too would dread to think of how to kick-start a project myself - I think well thought out planning in detail would be a necessity, not just "let's buy a domain name and go from there" type of approach.
Thanks also for your kind comments.
Cheers, Mike.

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your perspective Scientists don't often possess the skill set necessary to interact well with others. They do what they do, which often requires ALOT of alone time trying to figure out why this or that is happening and how express it in a Scientific way so it will pass muster with their peers and colleagues. They know ALOT about the subject but often can't explain it to others except in Scientific terms. This does NOT make them any less sincere it just makes them human, smarter than average and often too focused to see that they could use help from someone with other skill sets. It sounds like PlanetQuest needs a person that understands people, and can communicate well with them, to get it off the ground and into the realm of a working Boinc Project!
