QMC@home is giving me 22 c/h, SETI@home 17.8 c/h, CPDN 16 c/h. You pays your money and you takes your choice. But I still love Einstein, and lovers are blind.
Agreed, I'm with you there :-)
I was hmmmmm'ing in regard to an expectation of others who are of a different mindset - who may not be as kind, as I know you are, when they do their sums. Again it's the old chestnut/dialectic that is constructed/raised of credits v science. I personally see purely science ( with credits being 'whatever .....' ), but as a mod I have to at least attempt to understand the competitive viewpoint.
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

It might not look too bad if Astropulse (AP) becomes norm on Seti. Computer that was/is getting >50/hr using optimised application on normal units, now getting 21/hr for non-optimised AP unit.

Thanks, that helps to frame the picture better. Does Astropulse also have some added science merit, like better/quicker odds on finding ET and whatnot?
Cheers, Mike.

Since running S5R4 WUs I notice a marked increase of the disk cache memory usage in my SuSE Linux 10.3. It is now up to 64% of a 2 GB physical memory, with application data only using 22%. No swap memory used. Is there a reason for this?

The original Seti app is looking for narrow band signals. AP from the FAQ:
Quote:
What is Astropulse?
Astropulse is a new type of SETI. It expands on the original SETI@home, but does not replace it. The original SETI@home searches for narrowband signals, as does a conventional AM or FM radio. Astropulse, on the other hand, listens for broader-band, short-time pulses.
Click here for the science details of Astropulse.
What else might Astropulse find?
In addition to ET, Astropulse might detect other sources, such as rapidly rotating pulsars, exploding primordial black holes, or as-yet unknown astrophysical phenomena.
You can imagine that SETI@home is a search for a gold needle (ET) in a haystack. During the search for a gold needle, Astropulse might occasionally find a silver needle (a pulsar or black hole.) These silver needles have their own scientific value, even if they don't represent extraterrestrial communications.

Finished my first S5R4 run in 16 hours on my Linux box. Claimed credit 65.83, granted credit 192.24. The CPU is a 1.8 GHz AMD Opteron `1210 running SuSE Linux 10.3, BOINC 5.10.45, and is recognized as Type 2. Good work.
Tullio
So that's ~ 192/16 ~ 12 credits / hour. So that compares with your most recent S3 unit ( #41418361 ) as ~ 237/6.26 ~ 38 credits /hour?
Hmmmm ....
Cheers, Mike.
After a while I didn't give a lot of attention to credits while cruching the S5R3 jobs as it didn't seem to make any difference what machine was in use I got the same 237.xx in credits. So far I have only sent in a couple of R4 jobs but the claimed credit was only 63.69 on one of them with a time of 52,453.45. I'll be curious to see what the granted credits will be on this manchine as well as some of the slower 1.2 - 1.4 machines.
I should probably know the answer to this question after 3 years, but isn't the BOINC software supposed to equalize the credit/time when doing work on any of the projects using BOINC? If so, it appears that Einstein@home may be getting the short end on these new R4s.

The grant will be 63.69 * 2.92, or approximately 185.97.
In the middle of this i'm having this problem..
After 1 long week i pressed the update button to download the new workunits. But i got the following error :

Now the downloaded files doesn't have any dots in the screen saver. Its just rotating with "plain earth". What should i do now??

185.97 * 3600 / 52453.45 ~= 12.73 cr/hr
That being the case, they are using a different 'method' in order to calculate points with the R4s, or at least it appears so. Of course everyone is in the same boat so to speak, but doesn't the lower credits/time put Einstein@Home at a disadvatage in the overall BOINC skeem of things if crunchers only interested in points can accumulate points faster at some other BOINC project such as SETI or Rosetta? Or are all of the individual projects even related from the standpoint of credits or points?
And if they are somehow connected, might Einstein@Home stand to lose some of those more "point concious" participants?
