Well, brachiostorench is clearly a pack leader here, with achiebrochnorts an epic fail ( even though it flows so well ). Alas. I'll admit to veering towards sorbetchinchaor because I like ice cream dribbling down from my mouth just as much as the next person, but conversely away from asnortbichoerhc on the grounds of ( for myself at least ) icky biological implications. Newton you see did actually place a blunt metal probe in his own eye socket, behind the eyeball, and by poking things a bit he discovered :

(a) How incredibly painful that can be, and

(b) don't things just look odd sometimes when you do that, with

(c) asnortbichoerhc* a likely word he would use during such procedures, as in :

Quote:
Geeze Louise ! Doesn't that just asnortbichoerhc ....

T'is true.

Cheers, Mike.

* I'm adapting from the English language idiom as used in Newton's time, so clearly I could be in error here. However I think the pronunciation of this word could span the centuries and still connect. In context.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

6?! Well I just get

6?!

Well I just get gobbledygook if it's the last six that are correct... And the first six only work if the rest of the word looks like this: stochrone... And a mixture of three of each, gives the only other word it can possibly be. Which is:

OrbchisohTrance - A trance induced by looking at/or thinking of, spinning round things and round things that spin at the same time, and doing that together simultaneously.

*glare at Mike*

Or is it how Newton once affectionately described his wife and had a saucepan wedged on his head...? *look at Mike's head* Brachistochrone...? That one about an ideal body sliding down a curve of fastest descent...?

:)

Well I was going to hide this post - aggressively misusing my moderation abilities - but YOU ARE CORRECT !!!

BRACHISTOCHRONE

and you even provided the definition ! :-)

Yup Newton and his pals used to have these really propeller-head problems that they worked upon. Newton was into fluxions you see. We would call it calculus nowadays.

Take It Away Annie .....

Cheers, Mike.

( edit )

... find the y(x) which gives the least for the right hand side. Propeller heads ? Jet turbine heads more likely ... this is probably why Newton never married.

( edit ) Here's the full waffle from Wolfram. Now you'd kinda think : what in the blazes were they up to looking at this issue ? Was there a seventeenth century outbreak of frictionless beads arriving too late ? More than likely a Renaissance version of distance urination comparison for the well-to-do. :-)))

Yes. It was someone's else's wife that saucepanned him. Apologies for the error :)

I thnik they are CAT scan

I thnik they are CAT scan images of a peawilly peacock. Or maybe a LiarBird Lyrebird.

Now to the task :

- for starters there are way too many A's.

- PROST was a Formula One driver.

- ATAPI LOADERS refers to an old disk drive technology.

- ROAST PIE is good.

- PRATS DIE is not as frequent as it should.

- RESID OLAP TAA is utterly meaningless.

- PROLATE is the shape I'm becoming as I get older.

- the SPARTA DEAL fell through.

- DELIA SPRAT was married to Jack.

- TOADS LIE is a well known fact.

- whereas SIR TADPOLE doesn't.

- TAPE LIARS ADO is otherwise known as the Watergate scandal.

- use A RAISED PLOT if you don't like being buried.

.... now if you want me to use all the letters at once in the same word, then that's a different problem.

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

*put lid on eyes briefly* Yes. I saw...

Just how simplificatified* do you need it, Mr Ffing? *I'm trialling that for the OED, people. I expect it to be improooveminted any day now

I mean... Are you one of those people who are fine adding up but have to be restrained from chopping your fingers off when subtracting? *interested blink* Or can you work-away safely unsupervised, but think you're taking a reading class when maths is presented to you as a word problem...?

If latterly, then the following might help

This---v

Quote:
one of them is an A, but like the other one that isn't the first one of those either, it's not the first one.

referred to this ---v

Quote:

AAADEILOPRST

Two vowels are already in the right place

(that means two of the bold things here ---> AAADEILOPRST)

That can then be distilled to this: one of them is an A, but like the other one that isn't the first one of those either, it's not the first one.

and this: one of them is an A, but like the other one that isn't the first one of those either, it's not the first one.

If you use all that to best effect, it instantly points at you, and at this

01. apalasteroid

*demonstrate pointing in the indicated directions* as being completely wrong. Oddly it isn't though. You do have one letter in the correct position. Well done :) It too is a vowel. In fact it too is not the first of any of them, excepting of the last one (of which there is only one of course) but in the jumble, not in your smack-a-planet-between-the-eyes celestial rock thing, because that's a different one which is wrong where it is, but right where I put it and was the other one we discussed up there that wasn't an A.

I realise that's a LOT of information to take in, but it'll be worth doing so, I assure you, because it's packed full of clews, for which, you are all...very very welcome :)

Here:
02. parasailoted

you started very well. Four are correctly placed. The rest were not, which to be honest, is another way of saying they're wrong.

Think of it as having cut a cake into three slices, but then eating the whole thing yourself and getting successively more regretful as you progress through it. The bit you enjoyed. That's the bit that was all right.

*swivel eyes in vague direction of Mike*

Quote:
there are way too many A's.

There are quite a lot, yes. I noticed you left out fifteen of them in your efforts below... amongst others of course

Quote:

- PROST was a Formula One driver.

- ATAPI LOADERS refers to an old disk drive technology.

- ROAST PIE is good.

- PRATS DIE is not as frequent as it should.

- RESID OLAP TAA is utterly meaningless.

Yes he was, yes it does, yes it is, yes, that's true and I take it you don't have much experience with shower-curtain life-forms?

from wiki:

Quote:
Residolaptaa are a species of interestingly shy fungulates that congregate in the folds of shower curtains to conduct experimental mischief programs against humanity. Their telepathic powers when combined are a formidable force that resulted in the desperate measure of tethering soap to shower cubicle fixtures and fittings, with rope; hanging things from hooks in the hope they will still be there when you're blinded by water and need them; and ultimately entire wet-rooms - in the hope that some semblance of dignity whilst naked could be achieved by those who could afford it.

Now, where were we... oh yes!

Quote:

- PROLATE is the shape I'm becoming as I get older.

It's good to have a goal, even if it is just a shape I reckon...

Quote:

- the SPARTA DEAL fell through.

- DELIA SPRAT was married to Jack.

- TOADS LIE is a well known fact.

- whereas SIR TADPOLE doesn't.

- TAPE LIARS ADO is otherwise known as the Watergate scandal.

- use A RAISED PLOT if you don't like being buried.

.... now if you want me to use all the letters at once in the same word, then that's a different problem.

Yes. I noticed. Some of them are really quite short aren't they... but you did manage it three times. Well done on the Watergate scandal by the way. I thought that was very clever :) How you got there I mean, not the scandal itself particularly

So... here are your ZERO'S Mike

03. ATAPILOADERS
04. ROASTPIEaadl
05. SPARTADEALio
06. DELIASPRATao
07. TOADSLIEaapr

even dumping the letters you omitted at the end doesn't change the fact that you scored zilch for these

Your ONE'S

08. ARAISEDPLOTa
09. RESIDOLAPTAA
10. PROLATEaadis
11. SIRTADPOLEaa
12. PRATSDIEaalo **
13. PROSTaaadeil **

** they were ones, but they became twos with the letter dump

And here are your THREES

14. TAPELIARSADO

As you can see there is one

I might return with some more refined data at a later point if it appears to be needed. I suspect it will...

:)
